Can i go to the UK to study ?

I have been watching the new rules to see if their is any impact on the number of students and it is to early to see if their is a reduction in numbers.

However I did speak to my local MP about this and he indicated the new rules are not to stop genuie students comming to the UK, but to stop students that want to come to the UK and not attending the University. Also in the UK their are some colleges that accept students, but do no teach any classes and simply for a fee arrange the student to come to the UK. The new rules will help stop this.

Has anyone had problems with their visa?

Lectures in the UK

I have been attending University for the last 2 years part time working on my MBA and like talking to other students in my lectures. I got to start talking to a couple of Chinese students and found that the teaching style in the UK is radically different from the teaching styles in China.

This mainly centres around the way alot of UK leturers try to get students involved and interact with students. For example asking direct questions to the students or asking specific points to the students. This happens in alot of lectures, however from my Chinese freinds tell me this does not happen in China.

So if you are comming to the UK please don’t let this put you off. The lectures just want to engage with you to try and develop and get you thinking and even if you dont give a good answer this does not go against you. Enjoy the different teaching culture.

Baidu bullish on future prospects

HONG KONG – Baidu Inc, the owner of China’s most popular search engine, has “plenty of room” to expand, according to Chief Executive Officer Robin Li, after some analysts projected slowing growth at the company.

“Search just became the most popular application for Chinese Internet users, and there is still a lot of growth to expect for many years down the road,” Li said in a conference call with analysts on Thursday. Baidu reported on Wednesday that first-quarter profit more than doubled and forecast sales this quarter that beat analysts’ estimates as advertising fees surged.

Li, China’s richest man according to Forbes magazine, is spending more to boost Baidu’s search business and expand into services including social networking and electronic commerce. Still, analysts at Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group AG said Baidu’s growth this year won’t match the increase in 2010, when the company gained market share as Google Inc pulled out of the country.

“The growth rate will not be as fast as last year,” said Muzhi Li, an analyst at Mizuho Securities in Hong Kong. Baidu will be helped by advertising revenue from online commerce companies, he said.

Baidu’s stock fell less than 1 percent on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Wednesday before the earnings announcement. It has gained 57 percent this year, compared with the 88 percent gain in Sina Corp, owner of China’s most popular micro-blogging service, and a 29 percent increase in Tencent Holdings Ltd, the operator of the most popular Chinese online chat software.

Wealth doubled

Li more than doubled his wealth last year after Baidu’s stock more than tripled when Google announced plans in January 2010 to pull out of China.

Baidu’s net income climbed to 1.07 billion yuan ($164.5 million), or 3.06 yuan for each American depositary receipt, compared with 480.5 million yuan, or 1.38 yuan, a year earlier, according to Baidu’s statement on Wednesday. That exceeded the 1.02 billion yuan average of nine analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Second-quarter sales will be 3.23 billion yuan to 3.3 billion yuan, Baidu said. That tops the 3.14 billion yuan projected by analysts.

Baidu may “record slower growth rate in the second half of 2011 due to tougher annual comparisons”, Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in an April 15 report. Baidu’s revenue growth this year may slow to 69 percent, after sales increased 78 percent in 2010, according to a March 16 report by Credit Suisse.

White iPhone 4

After months of waiting Apple have launched the White iPhone 4.  Since Apple first unveiled the white iPhone last June when it released the  iPhone 4, consumers have been clamoring for the white device however production problems had delayed the launch from over 9 months.

It looks the same as the current Black iPhone 4, with all the same ports and screen sizes. I am sure reviews will start to appear soon. I personally picked the HTC Windows 7 phone last year, which runs Windows 7 but i find some features missing when you compaire it to Windows mobile 6.5. Lets hope Microsoft beings an update out soon.

New rules for student visas come into force

Changes have come into effect today affecting Tier 4 – the student tier – of the points-based system.

The changes to the Immigration Rules were announced by the Home Secretary in a statement to Parliament on 22 March. They follow a major public consultation on reforming Tier 4.

The aim of the revised Rules is to deliver a strong migration system which tackles immigration abuse, while allowing genuine students to study at genuine colleges.

Details of the changes were outlined in a news story on 22 March. You can also find a summary of the new student policy under ‘Related documents’ on the right side of this page.

New versions of our policy guidance documents for Tier 4 migrants and sponsors were published last month and come into effect today. You can find these in the Studying in the UK and Sponsoring migrants sections of this website.

VISA FOR UK STUDY

New English language requirements for Tier 4 (General) student visas come into effect

On 31 March the UK Government issued a ‘statement of intent’ setting out how Tier 4 of the points-based system will operate following the changes to the student visa policy. From 21 April the changes to the English language requirement will come into effect.

The following English language requirements apply to students whose Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is dated from 21 April 2011 onwards:

  • If you are applying for a Tier4 (General) visa to study a course below degree level (at NQF level 3-5), including English as a foreign language, foundation or pre-sessional courses, you will require a Secure English Language Test at B1 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
  • If you are applying to study at degree level and above you require a minimum English language level at B2 on the CEFR. If your sponsor is a Higher Education Institution (HEI), the sponsor may choose its own method of assessing your English language ability. However, if your sponsor is another type of institution you will require a Secure English Language Test to prove your B2 language ability. HEI’s are typically universities and other publicly funded further education colleges. Where HEI sponsors consider a student to be gifted, the English language requirement may be waived for that student.
